Pennant final beckons for Bonnar Cup team after semi-final win

On Sunday, our Bonnar Cup team played Kooyonga in the semi-final around the South Course at North Adelaide. Playing in groups of four, and behind the morning general public field, made for a slow day for all.

Losing the coin toss, Kooyonga decided to hit first. It was cold day with mild winds, allowing players to enjoy the day. The tight kikuyu grass fairways were in great condition and the greens were fair. However, if you had missed the small greens, lies then became very difficult and questionable at times.

Through three holes, the match was not in our favour with only two games up, two halves and our other three matches down. Myself, I was not doing well – some days you just don’t have the right stuff. Now, hoping for the rest of the team to rally for a comeback. With Jacskon Szyszlack and his dad helping out with team scoring, it was most appreciated, keeping me informed on all the matches.

At times, there were long delays due to the four player groupings. With very little change to the matches through nine holes, the momentum shifted our way through the next four holes and we now had two convincing wins by Aron Amos and Patrick Fisher. Well done lads.

With the middle order struggling, it would be up to the top order players to get the job done, and with more games finishing and some spectators still watching on, we followed the final groupings. Keeping a close eye on Colin Coleman’s match, he was a clear two holes ahead and staging a come back in a very close match.

Getting to the par 3 16th hole, downhill with a double tiered green, both of the matches were in our favour. Only requiring two more wins to seal the deal, we watched on with most of the grouping coming up short, on the front edge of the green, making for a very difficult two putt at best. Admiring the confidence of Andrew Kastanos pulling out a wedge to chip across the green surface, he barely bruised the grass and finished very close to the hole. It is a difficult green to put on at the best of times, but with the pressure of the day, our opponents had missed some small key putts allowing for another win. With one more match required, team mates watched from a far as Colin secured the win we needed.

With a great performance from the team. We now move on to the final being played at Glenelg Golf Club at a brisk 8:00 am starting time against a very stacked Royal Adelaide side. We’re looking forward to the challenge and with the victory, it will only make it sweeter.
